Cooling and shaping the moil Gathering glass from the crucible

As every beginner knows... "It ain't as easy as it looks!" With this in mind, while limiting the number of students to two, the classes taught at Morning Sun Studio will give you a good beginning to glassblowing.

Gathering the glass from the crucible is just the beginning. From there you take the glass to the marver or the blocks where you cool and shape the moil. Returning to the crucible to collect more glass and repeating the process at the marver prepares you to enter the proverbial "throat of the dragon" or glory hole. Much time is spent going from the glory hole to the marver or blocks. Many additions will be added through out the process which gives the completed piece that "one of a kind" finish.

The crucible melts the glass and maintains a temperature of 2150 degrees. The glory hole is approximately 2300 degrees of fire moving around inside the container. As a blower, you learn how to take this intense heat and relish the completed job.

Classes vary in length and cost:

For a simple introductory lesson, plan on devoting one day, generally a Saturday (9:00am - 3:00pm with a lunch break), to being in the hot-shop. This will cost $150 plus an additional $30 for lab materials. Expect to take home 3 to 4 pieces that you blow in this length of time.

If you want to continue taking classes:

I offer a 4 week and a 6 week class. Time spent in these classes is usually 3 hours on a particular night of the week. Cost of the 4 week class is $300 plus an additional lab fee based on the amount of material used. The 6 week class is $450 plus the additional lab fee based on the amount of material used.
